🇸🇪 Northern Lights in Sweden

Abisko has the clearest skies in Scandinavia — here's everything you need to see the aurora in Sweden in 2026.

Why Sweden — and Why Abisko Specifically?

Sweden's secret weapon is Abisko National Park, which sits in a unique rain shadow created by the surrounding mountains. While the rest of Scandinavia battles clouds and snow storms, Abisko statistically enjoys clearer skies than anywhere else in the Nordic region. Meteorologists call it the "blue hole of Abisko." For aurora hunters, this is everything.

Combined with the 2026 solar maximum, Sweden is primed to deliver extraordinary displays — Kp 3 events that would normally only be visible in Norway's far north are reaching as far south as Stockholm.

"We drove for hours trying to dodge clouds in Norway. Then we took the train to Abisko. Clear skies, Kp 4, and three hours of solid aurora." — Space Wonders reader, Feb 2026

📍 Best Locations in Sweden

⭐ Abisko — The #1 Aurora Spot in Scandinavia

Abisko is small — just a train station, a handful of lodges, and 77 km² of pristine national park. That's what makes it perfect. The Aurora Sky Station, reached by a chair lift to the top of Mount Nuolja, offers an unobstructed 360° view above cloud level with a heated viewing platform and restaurant.

✈️ Kiruna — The Gateway City

Kiruna is the nearest city to Abisko (90 min by train) and has its own aurora credentials at 67.9°N. Known for the ICEHOTEL — the world-famous hotel built entirely from river ice each winter — Kiruna is a destination in itself.

🌲 Gällivare — The Local Alternative

Less touristy than Abisko or Kiruna, Gällivare sits at 67°N and offers excellent dark skies with a more authentic local feel. Good base for exploring the Dundret Nature Reserve, which has a ski resort and aurora viewpoint.
